History of Cranberries
Cranberries are one of only three fruits native to
North America and was a staple of Native Americans
long before the Pilgrims landed.
The most popular
food use was pemmican, a sort of winter survival
ration made of crushed cranberries, wild game meat
and melted fat. Native Americans also ate cranberries
mashed with cornmeal and baked into bread. Native
Americans taught early settlers to utilize this wild
fruit for food, and it became a staple along with
salt cod and cornmeal. Sailors began to take barrels
of cranberries to sea to prevent scurvy.
The fruit
was initially referred to as “crane berry”,
because the plant’s slender stem and downward-hanging
blossom resemble the neck, head and beak of a crane.
Over time the word was shortened to “cranberry”.
The vines come out of dormancy in spring and flower
in early summer. Cranberries are harvested September
to early November. |
