Did you know?
• 20-25 almonds (approximately
one ounce)
contain as much calcium as 1/4 cup of milk, a
valuable tool in preventing
osteoporosis.
• Almonds are the best whole food source of
vitamin
E,
in the form of alpha-tocopherol, which
may help prevent
cancer.
• If you're pregnant or are thinking about it, almonds
are a
great source of the folic acid you need!
• Almonds contain more magnesium than oatmeal
or even
spinach.
• Build strong bones and teeth with the
phosphorus in
almonds.
Nuts are full of important nutrients. Nuts are a significant
source of protein, making them an alternative to meat in the
food guide pyramid. They're also rich in important minerals
such as copper, magnesium, zinc, iron and calcium.
Almonds,
for example, provide 8 percent of the
daily value for calcium
per ounce. Walnuts and hazelnuts provide 20 percent of the
daily value of copper per ounce. The newest nutritional benefit
of
nuts to be recognized, however, is their antioxidant and phytochemical
properties. Brazil nuts, for example, are rich
in selenium.
Almonds, peanuts and hazelnuts are excellent sources
of vitamin E. Both nutrients are
considered important antioxidants
in the fight against heart disease and certain kinds of cancer.
Almonds, chestnuts and pistachios, are considered good sources
of fiber. Nuts also help in reducing
the risk of a number of
chronic diseases, including cancer and heart disease.
